Michael Franke Exhibition

Michael Franke Exhibition

Michael Franke is an artist, born in Bonn, Germany in 1957. He is most famous for his paintings which reflect a thoughtful perception to the world. Whilst in Italy, I was given the opportunity to visit one of his exhibitions in Siena, Tuscany, named "Antron - Divinity Etruscan between the underworld and ecstasy". Antron is seen as a journey through the landscape of Etruria, towards the beginning of the cultural Europe we know today.  I was fascinated by his unique style of painting which consisted of various layers of shades and tones giving them great depth and shape.

Franke's style is reminiscent of impressionist artists such as Monet and Rembrandt. His paintings consist of broad brush strokes, and less precise detail, as used by Monet. Also the lighting of his paintings is shown mainly through one light source, similar to that of Rembrandt.

As in the photos shown below, you can see the Rembrandt style where there is only one light source and that is usually the focal point of the piece. There is also a sense of Monet style impressionism where although it is a realistic painting, the markings and broad brush strokes give the painting an almost blurry outlook. Here there is a relationship between Franke's work and the theme of 'layers' because of the way that the painting portrays depth and shape with unique shadings and earthy tones. Many of his paintings show a path leading to a luminous light in the distance, perhaps conveys a brighter hope for the future.
