Artwork from Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford

On October 1st I went on a trip to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. I was fascinated by unique designs and patterns in the large range of sculptures and artworks that represented the theme of 'layers'. Here are a few examples of the shapes and patterns in artworks that I found interesting and I felt portrayed 'layers' well.

Detailed, intricate, story
A hollow sphere with an intricate design that gives the piece a lot of texture and shape. I was intrigued by the detail within in it which portrayed a lot of layers of texture, as well as possibly telling a story of the past with the pictures carved into it.

Pattern, woven, intricate
I found the flooring in the art museum quite interesting as it seems that the metal has been weaved in and out, creating an intricate pattern. The layers of the weaved metal gives it a new and interesting texture.

Flowing, shape, folded
I loved the shape of this 'Adeona albida' as it is flowing and kind of represents the shape of waves from the ocean, where it is from. The holes in it make it more intriguing by giving it more texture, also changing shape where the folds are.

Coral, texture, detailed
This coral piece from the museum proved to be very interesting as the shapes and depth within it give it texture and show more detail in the coral. I like the tones it brings from the depths of the shapes going from light to dark as it brings out the layers of shape and texture of the coral piece.

Fossils, layers of sediment, time
I found this object with fossils in it quite interesting as the shapes and earthly tones of the fossils show the time and effort it has taken for these fossils to come about. The layers of sediment give it a lot of texture and I like the shapes that the fossils have as they give it a very unique outlook.

Feathers, patterned, shape
I liked the shapes and patterns on the feathers on the bird as it show the physical layers of feathers that give them more of a shape and a texture.

Worn, time, historic
I liked the look of this crocodile skull because its contrast in tones give it quite a rustic look, showing how it has been worn away by time. The layers of tone and shape show its history.
Symmetrical, detailed pattern, contrasting colours
The contrasting colours on the butterfly compliment each other well, highlighting it over the green background. The detailed pattern on the butterfly stand out from the leaves in the background with little detail in them. I like the layers of colour shown in this photo because they realistically represent the textures and shapes that normally be seen.

Time, history, texture
The textures on the skull give it a more interesting outlook as it shows that time have worn layers of it away bit by bit. The colour of the photo gives it a kind of golden glow that could represent its antiquity and history.

Lines, patterned, construction
I found the actual Pitt Rivers building quite interesting because of its construction and the designs patterned around the windows that give the building an interesting and exciting outlook. The horizontal lines show the perspective of the building and emphasises its large size.
